State-Owned Historic Properties
LIST OF STATE-OWNED HISTORIC PROPERTIES (as of November 24, 2025)
The Illinois State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is mandated by 20 ILCS 3420/5(b) to “maintain a current list of all historic resources owned, operated, or leased by the State and appropriate maps indicating the location of all such resources.” To meet that requirement, the State Historic Preservation Officer (Officer) has compiled a list of such buildings and structures. The Officer has determined which of these properties are already listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), are listed as a National Historic Landmark, and has made determinations on which others are eligible for listing on the NRHP. Two types of data are presented: an Excel spreadsheet and a .kmz file. We recommend that both be used together to make it easier to see information about individual properties. Within the .kmz file, there are individual state agency and public university files. After dowloading these two files, you will be able to sort and search as necessary.
Within each .kmz file, the properties are divided into different color-coded pins:
- Red pins indicate that one or more buildings/structures at the location are eligible for listing or are already listed on the NRHP or are a National Historic Landmark.
- Yellow pins indicate that one or more buildings/structures have not been studied enough to make a determination.
- Green pins (which will be added to each file slowly) are currently considered to be ineligible.
Some pins represent a single building/structure, or a group of buildings. Click on any pin and information about that location will be displayed. This information is the same as is seen in the spreadsheet. Updates will be made and a “current as of” date will be included on this webpage.

DISCLAIMER
All determinations could change over time and will be updated as necessary. As properties are liquidated from State ownership, they will be removed from the files during a future update. The SHPO understands that not all buildings and structures are currently in our database, and we are working with other state agencies to continue adding properties as they are identified.
